BOMA Business Showcase Recap

Published by Tim on April 17th, 2013

Last week, our Streamwood staff hosted the BOMA Suburban Chicago Business Showcase at our branch office location.  This recurring event is held at a different member building each month.  Our staff and guests enjoyed food, refreshments and networking.  In addition, guests learned more about concrete coatings for parking garages and warehouse floors, as well as catch basin repairs.  We thank our staff and our vendors for making this event a success!

Rose Paving Special Projects: Guard Shack, Baby Guard Shack!

Published by Candace on March 20th, 2013

This past winter, the Rose Paving Special Projects Division completed a 3.5-foot by 7-foot security guard shack installation at one of Chicago’s most famous sports facilities.  The project called for the demolition and widening of the existing entrance to the parking lot, installation of a new concrete island, concrete curbing, concrete sidewalk, new concrete entrance, and guard booth.

Our team executed the project on time and within budget, utilizing the attentive project management team, traffic control, and excellent customer service.  An efficient timeframe was imperative, as our crews were working around a busy schedule of NBA, NHL and concert events.  Security is very important at this facility, and Rose Paving took extra care.

Overall, the specs included the following: 5 concrete bollards, 280 linear feet of concrete curb removal and replacement, 1,660 square feet of concrete sidewalk, apron and entrance installation, and 675 square feet of infrared asphalt repair.

Concrete Facts: 8 Things You Didn’t Know…

Published by Karen on August 29th, 2012

Our Trivia Series continues this week with a collection of fun facts you may not have known about concrete.

  • Concrete is a mixture of Portland cement, sand, rock, water, and chemical admixtures.
  • There are as many different concrete mix designs as there are uses for concrete.  The design mixture will vary based on the application.
  • High early strength concrete is one mix design especially useful for concrete pavement repairs, as it reaches higher compressive strength earlier in its lifecycle, allowing roadways to be re-opened faster than with conventional mixes.
  • “Curing” is one of the most important steps in concrete construction, because concrete hardens and gains strength over time.  If proper cure time is not adhered to, early load exposure may result in a compromised surface area.
  • During the curing period, new concrete must be kept moist to assist the hydration process.  This can be done with the use of hoses or sprinklers, wet burlap, or commercially available curing compounds which seal in moisture.
  • When dealing with parking lots and/or other roadways, traffic should be re-routed around the affected areas for 4 to 7 days based on the contractors’ recommendation and mix design.
  • PSI, or “pounds per square inch,” is the measurement used to describe the compressive strength of concrete.
  • Various reinforcement materials such as rebar, wire mesh, fiber mesh, and smooth dowels can be used to help resist external force.

A Closer Look at Concrete Repair

Published by Candace on March 16th, 2011

Concrete is one of the most important construction materials used in a variety of site structures – especially parking lots!  Well-designed and properly applied concrete offers exceptional durability and long life in any structure.  However, concrete ages too.  In fact, once the mix has been laid and dries, the aging process begins.  As concrete progresses through its life cycle, cracks and holes may form.  Without ongoing maintenance, water may enter through these openings and undermine the substrate.  The most effective form of concrete repair is to remove and replace the deteriorated area.

Settling of poorly compacted fill and/or freezing and thawing of the sub-grade are common causes for concrete instability.  Removing and replacing deteriorated or damaged concrete is imperative to keep structures in top condition, alleviate potential liabilities, and project a positive image on your property.  Concrete removal and replacement can be performed on sidewalks, stairs, curbs, gutters, dumpster pads, dock pads, parking bumpers, walls and ramps.
